It will be interesting to see how the man himself handles it all Sidharth Monga in Kolkata November 3, xxxx "There is no Diwali festival. This is Sachin festival," says Biswarup Dey, the Cricket Association of Bengal treasurer. "This is officially 'Salute Sachin'." That, of course, is the name CAB has given to a week-long celebration of Sachin Tendulkar.Nobody does the dramatic better than Kolkata. Next to Dey stands a man with a huge bouquet of flowers with "199" written on it. Dey himself holds a basket full of roses. He is waiting for Tendulkar to arrive in Kolkata, where he will start his final Test series, and his 199th Test. Soon the word spreads - about a xxxx people gather outside Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport to await Tendulkar's arrival. About a 100 of them must be the media.Inside, across the glass partition, Dey and other officials wait as the flight has been delayed. Across the glass partition there is another concrete wall. From behind the wall, Tendulkar sees the crowd, knows the commotion his exit there will cause, and starts moving towards the other gate. A surreal scene ensues: Tendulkar is moving behind the wall, but the xxxx-odd gathered run along with the invisible Tendulkar. After a huge chaos, Tendulkar finally - and safely - manages to get into his car to join his other team-mates who played the ODIs against Australia and have arrived from Bangalore. This welcome, right here in Kolkata, is the official start of Tendulkar's farewell series. Wonder what Tendulkar makes of it. If he takes time out and explores the city, he is likely to find cut-outs of himself, big hoardings with different people's quotes on him - the one where Don Bradman says he saw a bit of himself in Tendulkar is the most common - and finally bigger cut-outs when he reaches Eden Gardens for practice on Monday. Now all this might not come to pass - there is a Test match against West Indies to be played - but the plans in place are ambitious and elaborate. Today, the CAB president and the state sports minister launched a music album by Piloo Bhattacharya, which contains seven Bengali and four Hindi songs about Tendulkar. They will be played the moment Tendulkar enters Eden Gardens for practice. Waiting to greet him outside the team's dressing room is his life-size wax replica, crafted by a Bengali artist-cum-fan. On Monday, a photo exhibition of 100 Tendulkar photos will be unveiled. The CAB had invited former Test captains Sunil Gavaskar and Sourav Ganguly to inaugurate this at Bhawanipore Club, but both are in Colombo on a charity walk. It hasn't deterred the plans. On match eve, the CAB plans to get BCCI president N Srinivasan to unveil the coin for the toss in the Test, with Tendulkar on one side, and Eden Gardens on the other. Wonder what heads and tails will be. The CAB is hoping Tendulkar will attend, and personally receive a silver banyan tree with gold leaves from the CAB. The groundsmen will gift him a replica of Eden Gardens.Tendulkar's face has already been printed on the match tickets. "Never ever have we seen anybody's face on an Eden Test ticket," says Dey. There is something or the other planned for all five days of the Test. With the first day's ticket comes a souvenir - a book. More ambitiously, 70,000 Tendulkar masks are reportedly going to be handed out to the spectators. If the CAB can pull this off, it will be quite a sight. On day two, every seat is expected to have a placard, and when all the placards are held up together it is set to form a huge Tendulkar face. Day three is likely to feature a release of 199 balloons with Tendulkar's face on them. Day four could bring the West Bengal chief minister to felicitate Tendulkar. This was supposed to be a mega event after the fifth day's play - with Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan, who will be here for the Kolkata film festival, supposed to join the West Bengal chief minister - but the government is not so sure the match will last the five days. Advancing the event into the fourth day needs the ICC's clearance. On the fifth day, an aircraft is scheduled to hover over Eden Gardens and shower 199 roses. It is going to be an interesting week to see how much of this actually materialises, and if it does how Tendulkar handles it all. He must already have enough on his mind with this being his last series. Sidharth Monga is an assistant editor at ESPNcricinfoWhile I do believe that Sachin's past his prime sometime back, but there's no denying that he deserves such farewell and much more. I was in 10th grade when he debuted for India. He has been part of our lives...a reference point at every stage of our lives. Thanks for the memories Sachin!! Yes, we Indians are like that...emotional, and love our heroes sooo much! If someone thinks this is not right, then we can't help it...we r what we r. This, more than a farewell, is in fact a way of telling him how much him. Great job Koltattans for representing feelings of whole of India!! Yes, it's madness and mad WE are for our most beloved and worshiped hero. Sachin is not just a cricketer to have played the game, he is a force that binds this country together in one name - INDIA. He is the reason with which every Indian lifts and waves the tri-color with utmost pride. I have witnessed and felt what it is like to see him score a century in packed stadium. I can vouch for my life, that experience is unparallel to anything in life. He has given this country and its people so much that is beyond describable in words. Now the great man is playing for the penultimate time. So everything that is being done is justified and cannot be called unnecessary. The people of Kolkata are blessed to have received this opportunity. So do it on behalf of India and its people. Show India's greatest son the love and madness we have for him..... Yes, it's madness and mad WE are for him. @Lillian Thomson: I agree that all these celebrations are over the top. At the same time, there's no denying Sachin's place amongst the greats (or even better!) purely on account of the number of years he has been on top of his game (in an era where teams play 40 ODIs and 12 tests a year, short tours, long travel, media hype blah blah). Comparing eras shouldn't usually happen. Yet since you've given examples of yore, with all due respects, Dickie's list seems to be around the players he grew up watching/umpired in his time. He was pretty much on the decline when Sachin came on the scene. Secondly, it would have been interesting to see Bradman's average in today's day and age. The Don played in an era when cricket was relaxed, oppositions were monotonous, fielders were less fitter etc. Interestingly, in the one series where the bowlers really dished out to him, his average came down by almost 44 (Bodyline!). So, not sure if any comparison is sensible. To all the vitriol spewing anti Sachin tribe posting here:- No one cares about what you think. He is and always will be a legend. We are not doing a debate here, he is being felicitated, irrespective of what you all think or feel. Well played Sachin, hope you do well in your last two tests. Even if you score two pairs, no one will cry. Just enjoy the love of the people and have fun for the last two tests. That is all. @zxaar, Kallis, even being an all-rounder having more Average than sachin itself a massive achievement my friend...He has 540+ Wickets in international Cricket...He needs more energy than sachin to play test cricket for this many years being an all rounder and that too a medium fast bowler..(no one can deny that my friend) @zxaar, If you are interested in writing some books, please do so by starting with the 100th 100...and India Won...Oops. I meant lost...took 36+ balls to reach 100 from 80+ runs against QUALITY Bangladesh bowlers.. @zxaar, you just posted most amazing stat...Who would believe in your stats? It is proven that Ponting is superior than Kallis and Tendulkar in Finals..I can`t remember that sachin was the highest scorer in xxxx Nor xxxx Finals.Take some time to realize the master class batting of ponting in that xxxx Final against us. The same match sachin scored 4..we won the xxxx Finals by the brilliant batting from captain and gambhir..When it matters? it matters in World events not in bilateral series friend..I hear Indian friends often cite the Bradman quote that Mrs Bradman found Sachin to be similar to the Don. They very rarely mention Bradman's other quotes: that Sobers played the greatest innings that he ever saw or that Pollock was the greatest batsman that he ever saw. It's only six months ago that Dickie Bird released his team of the greatest cricketers since xxxx. Gavaskar was in it, even Imran Khan was in it as skipper, but the middle order was V Richards, Pollock, Sobers and Chappell. All these lists are subjective. But you would be hard-pressed to find a single non-Asian cricket lover who didn't place Viv Richards, Graeme Pollock and Gary Sobers significantly above Tendulkar. Tendulkar was a wonderful player, who would have been in any international team from xxxx to around xxxx. But that should be enough. We don't have to try to pretend that he was greater than he really was. Here is a fun fact for those who are interested in comparing batsmen. Tendulkar averages 54.4 in tournament finals, Ponting averages 38.42 in finals, while Kallis averages 24.21. So now it is clear who performs when it matters most. Nov 4, xxxx: Shivnarine Chanderpaul is among the last of the cricketers around from the xxxxs. But then longevity has always been the essence of his game Nov 3, xxxx: A Tendulkar extravaganza has been planned at Eden Gardens through the Test and its build-up. It will be interesting to see how the man himself handles it all Oct 27, xxxx: It might be Tendulkar's farewell party, but the hastily arranged two-Test series gives the boys from the Caribbean a chance to play with freedom and score points for themselves There are some incredibly talented footballers in the Premier League. However some of these footballers have some incredibly hot wives and girlfriends too. We are dedicated to treating your personal information with care and respect. When you look into Spanish football you will see Barcelona B and Real Madrid B (Castilla) taking part in the Segunda Division, Spains competitive second division. These teams have been playing in the competitive Spanish league for many years now and it seems to work in developing young talents. The system instilled in Spain allows young talent to gain experience by playing at a high level instead of bench warming with their parent club. This brings to question; will it work in the Premier League? Well, according to reports, clubs are to discuss with the FA to see if this could happen in English leagues.I don't think it will work personally because what league will they go into? They can't go directly into the Championship, League One or League Two as it would be unfair to the teams who were promoted from the division below. All off the hard work in getting promotion would go to waste if they could not progress because of this new idea.A possible way to implement this idea would be to increase the capacity of the Premier League with four teams getting promoted this season, with no one going down and the four B teams being added to the Championship. However, this would ruin this years' relegation battle and also make promotion less competitive which is a bad way to launch the concept. Also, what teams will be in place to become a team that also has a B team? How can the FA decide because they can't have 20 teams with B teams. So, who will be chosen, the top two , four, six teams....? Where does it end? There is no way that they can choose teams in a fair manour.Another key issue is finance; running one team at a high level is hard enough let alone two. So, it will be almost impossible to run the team financially - especially with the Financial Fair Play rules coming in to effect.People may suggest putting them into the conference, but it will raise the same questions as the earlier issues. It's unfair on teams who get promoted. However, this brings up the issue that the sides simply won't be good enough to cope at the Championship level. The B teams wouldn't be good enough to compete in a league as good as the Championship. If they did get compete and get promoted, they wouldn't be able to get promoted because of UEFA rules, so, yet again, it would lead to confusion and a lot of hassle for nothing. They can play in the FA cup, but we don't want to see Man United A against Man United B. It would be ridiculous. My Final point is where would they play? If they play at the home teams ground, they would have to alternate weeks, but the ground would be virtually empty because, lets face it, fans would prefer to go to see the real team rather than the reserves and if they were to be played at the training grounds, there would be no atmosphere so yet another issue is raised. So to conclude, this concept couldn't work being launched in this day and age. If they proposed it at the same time of the La Liga, maybe it would have worked, but nowadays, with all the different leagues and various issues arising from it, it just can't happen. Although it may improve the future of the English team, it won't be long before foreign players are drafted in so it won't be worth it and it won't lead to much improvement.FIFA to Lead Investigation Into the Voting Process for the xxxx and xxxx World CupsMichael Garcia, the chief investigator for FIFA, is going to be looking into the voting process for the xxxx and xxxx World Cups. Garcia used to be a New York lawyer and now heads up FIFA?s ethics committee, which is quite the oxymoron. Of course, the xxxx event is in Russia with the xxxx tournament being awarded to Qatar. The xxxx Cup has been dogged with corruption allegations and Garcia said, ?I will conduct interviews in various places and I hope that those who have some information, even if they are not obliged to give me some, will agree to talk to me. It looks like we?re stuck with Russia hosting the event in xxxx, but the xxxx Cup is still up in the air. It?s likely Qatar will still get it, but the games will be moved to the Northern Hemisphere winter months. Also the Confederations Cup, which will take place in xxxx and xxxx are both to be played in the month of June.Russia beat out bids from England, Spain/Portugal and Holland/Belgium while Qatar beat out Australia, Japan, America and South Korea. It?s been reported that those defeated nations could still file official complaints stating that the bidding process was distorted if the event doesn?t have to take place in the summer. Also, the television broadcasting rights would have to be renegotiated since the contracts are for a June or July World Cup.When you look into Spanish football you will see Barcelona B and Real Madrid B (Castilla) taking part in the Segunda Division, Spains competitive second division.
